What is a Spider, Bot or Robot?

A “Spider, Bot, Robot, or Crawler” is an automated program or script operated by a search engine that surfs the Web just like you would. As it visits each Web site, it records or indexes it, all the words on each site and notes each link to other sites.

It then “clicks” on a link, and continues to read, index and store another Web site.
The Spider often reads and then indexes the entire text of each Web site it visits into the main database of the search engine it is working for. (Some engines indexing up to a certain number of pages of a site, often about 400, and then stopping. Apparently, this is because the Web has become so large that it’s unfeasible to index everything. How many pages the spider will index is not entirely predictable. Therefore, it’s a good idea to specifically submit each important page in your site that you want to be indexed, such as those that contain important keywords).

A Spider is like an electronic librarian who cuts out the table of contents of each book in every library in the world, sorts them into a gigantic master index, and then builds an electronic bibliography that stores information on which texts reference which other texts. Some Spiders can index over a million documents a day! For your marketing purposes, you should know that some search engines have spiders that will visit your Web site. What the spider sees on your site will determine how your site is listed in its index.
Remember, as a software spider visits your site it notes any links on your page to other sites. In any search engine’s vast database are recorded all the links between sites. The search engine knows which sites you linked to, and more importantly, which ones linked to you.
Many engines will even use the number of links to your site as an indication of popularity, and will then boost your ranking based on that factor.

Which is the best Link Building Method

SEO LinksJust to cover the ground, let’s go over what link building is quickly. Link building is the process of building backlinks to your site. The more backlinks (links from other sites to your site) a site has, the higher it ranks on the search engines. Link building therefore is the mission of all money making webmasters.
Link building methods have changed from time to time and a specific method that worked yesterday may not work today. This is due to changes in the industry over time and in some cases extreme abuse. If a specific link building method has been abused too much, then that method will not work anymore.
Therefore it’s very important to know which link building method works today so that you can spend your time in a most productive way.
There are many link building methods out there today that work with some working better than others. Below are some of the today’s popular links building methods:
Article Submission
If you are reading this article, then you know that you can publish your own article in article directories. Not only do you gain backlinks to your site from your published articles (see bottom of this article), you will get some traffic as a bonus. Think of you reading this article. There might be many reading your published articles as well.
Article submission is a great way of building backlinks as it provides you with 100% relevant contextual backlinks that Google loves.
Directory Submission
Directory submission used to work lot better before, but it is still a popular link building method that still works if done properly. How many directories are out there as of this date is anyone’s guess but one thing is certain: that most of the directories aren’t worth submitting to.
Google considers a Yahoo Directory link as a quality backlink so if you can afford and justify the cost, it is worth submitting to Yahoo Directory. Yahoo charges $300 for a yearly submission and there is no guarantee that your site will be approved!
DMOZ is another directory that is worth submitting to and can provide great benefit in your SEO campaign. It may take months to get the approval from DMOZ and the chance of getting approved is pretty slim. A lot of small directories use the DMOZ directory categories so getting listed with DMOZ would mean getting bonus listings on many other web directories.
Another good directory to submit to is the BOTW directory that costs $99 for a yearly submission and $299 for a permanent listing.
Other than the above, you should look for quality directories where you can submit your site. You can judge the quality of the directories by analyzing the number of sites listed, number of backlinks the directory has, PR, age of the directory, etc.
Social Bookmarking
Social bookmarking worked like charm only a few months ago. If bookmarked on authority and quality bookmarking sites like Digg, Mixx, Propeller, etc, then you can still make good use of social bookmarking. Other than backlinks, social bookmarking also offers you some bonus traffic depending on where you submit to. If you can manage to put together or collect a good bookmarking site list, then social bookmarking can still be a useful link building method.
Blog Commenting
This is a link building method where lots of spamming has already been done so to make the best of it, you need to work a little harder here. It is best to find quality blogs related to your own category and make on-topic relevant comments. Not only do your comments add value to the blogpost, you now have a greater chance of getting your comment approved and your comments have greater chance of staying on those blogposts.
Press Releases
Submitting to press release sites can get you some backlinks as well. It is however hard to put together a list of good press release sites that are worth submitting to. If a good list can be managed, then this method can offer some quality relevant backlinks as well.
Social Media and Web 2.0 Pages
There are a lot of quality social media and Web 2.0 sites where you can publish your articles for backlinks. You should write articles that are relevant to your site and publish them on these social media and Web 2.0 sites with your keywords hyperlinked to your own site. Some of the authority sites are Squidoo, Hubpages, Blogger, Wordpress.com, etc.
Social media and Web 2.0 links are very popular these days because they work great. They offer quality, relevant contextual backlinks that Google and other major search engines love. There are lots of other link building methods out there, but if you can utilize the above ones to their fullest potential, there is no need for any other methods.

Why Website ‘A’ Gets Indexed Faster Than Website ‘B’

GoogleSuppose website A adds a new page, and suppose at the same time website B also adds a new page. Will they both be indexed side by side by Google? Nope! It is quite clear that Google doesn’t index every site at the same speed. Why is this? What can website B do to get indexed as fast as website A?

Why is Website ‘A’ Indexed Faster:

Let see why. Google is indexing new pages from site A before site B primarily because of the frequency with which the former adds new pages. This means, if you add pages everyday then the Googlebot is going to take notice of this and begin to spider your website more frequently because you are constantly updating the site with fresh and unique content. But if you add new pages less often (say – once a month), then Google crawlers won’t index your content as regularly, as is the case with website B.

What Website ‘B’ Can Do?

Adding Content Regularly

The only immediate way to increase the ‘crawl rate’ of the Google spider on your website is by adding new pages with unique content on a regular basis. Many people do this these days by blogging! Just adding any old nonsense, however, won’t help. Google still needs to value the content you are inserting. Remember, boring plain articles will do nothing for you. But well written, useful articles with valuable information that solves problems will do a great deal more! Write for your visitors, not the search engines.

Add An XML Sitemap via Google Webmaster Tools

Adding a sitemap xml document to Google through your Google webmasters account is yet another option. This will allow Google to see your updated content and you can also see the ‘crawl rate’ of your website. Adding a sitemap xml file can also offer you a multitude of other statistics concerning your website when you look at Google Webmaster Tools. So if you haven’t added an xml sitemap already do it right away!

Get Links From Websites That Google Indexes Quickly

Another way to get your webpage‘s indexed quicker is by getting links from other websites that Google indexes quickly. For example, if you add your content to websites like Nielsen-online which is a website that gets indexed very frequently, then Google will consider your link worthy and chase it to your website. From there, after evaluating what it finds on your website, Google will decide whether to index your webpage or not.

Get Links From Your Indexed Pages

Another important thing to pay very close attention to is to make sure you link the new pages on your website with other indexed pages. This will enable Google to see your newly added pages and as the bot revisits these pages it will find the new link leading to your new page.

One final note – You should take care not to add content on your website just for SEO purposes. New pages should be added only if you feel your website visitors are going to benefit from this added content. In the end, the visitors experience is always paramount!

Differences between Search Engines and Web Directories

Web DirectorySearch engine” and “Web directory” are two different search services available to the Web community; although they are often mistakenly confused. Search engines have indices that are built up by robots or crawlers; whereas Web directories build up their indices through human editors. Many search engines and directories contain both a computer-generated index and a human generated index, and are referred to as hybrids.
Google, Inktomi, AltaVista, AlltheWeb and the like are all forms of search engines. These search engines write programs known as robots, crawlers and/or spiders that have the following functions:
(1) to locate Web pages
(2) to read the contents of the Web pages and
(3) report its findings back to the search engine’s indices or databases. Many search engines update their index either on a bi-monthly or monthly basis. When Web searchers use a search engine to locate Web sites that are relevant to the keyword search, they are searching the search engine’s index. A search engine with a larger and more up-to-date index is a better representation of the information available in the Web.
Yahoo!, Open Directory Project (dmoz.org), Gipsy, Linksite and the like are all forms of Web directories. These directories use human editors to review sites that are submitted for submission to the directory. Directories, unlike search engines, use a hierarchical tree structure to organize their database. Another common distinction is that a directory tends to list Web sites (root directory of a site or homepage) whereas a search engine will list Web pages (individual pages of a Web site). Due to the manual process of adding sites to a directory, directories often have to supplement their search results with a search engine partner to increase the relevancy of the produced search results.
